up to and what our next learning steps will be. We love to find out what people think about

Week 4 Term 4

In our 'Bee' inquiry we learnt all about the life cycle of a bee by using books, models and this very interesting bee life cycle clip from Youtube. Come in and have a look at our bee life cycle diagrams we produced in our inquiry teams.

We continued with our Grass Hopper tennis program this week. Here we are learning to control the ball on the racquet and not let it roll off.
Brenda kindly put togther all our warm and cool flower pictures to make a Pop Art design in the style of Andy Warhol. You can see the individual pictures on our Kidzstuff blog or pop into class to see them up on the wall.
In art this week we looked at another artist and author, Eric Carle. We worked on preparing coloured paper using paint, round and flat brushes, tooth brushes, sticks, sponges and art combs. Next week we will be sharing our paper with our friends to make a bee in Eric Carle's destinctive style.
Our poem this week taught us all about the very busy life of hard working bees.

Week 3 Term 4

This week we acquired a whole lot more knowledge about bees when we had a special visit from kathy and Jayden telling us all about how the look after their bee hives and collect the honey. They also made us realise that without bees many plants would not get pollinated or continue to grow into new plants.Thank you so much for sharing your time and knowledge with us.
We then took a closer look at the parts of a flower and how the pollen got onto the bees and then onto another flower
In our art and design lesson we looked at pop art by Andy Warhol and set out to make our own flower pop art in a similar style. Here we are painting flowers using cold colours. Watch out for the finished pictures up in our class next week.
Our poem this week was also about bees...how many queen bees can you spot?
Thanks to the lovely weather on Tuesday we had our first Grass Hopper tennis session. We had a go at getting the ball over the net to our partners. There was a lot of running to retrieve the ball so we got very fit. We have 3 more of these session over the next 3 weeks. Thanks to Suzanne for working with us.
The sun was out again on Friday afternoon and we worked with our Room 5 buddies on parts of the body using Te Reo. You may have seen the results of our learning out on the playground before the rain washed it away.
Have a great weekend and week. Remember our classroom door is always open and we love to see parents sharing their child's work before or after school, so pop in and see what we have been up to.

Week 2 Term 4

This week we continued acquiring knowledge to help us with our inquiry into the link between bees, flowers and people. We learnt about the different parts of a bee and at the same time developed our team work skills.
You can follow the progess of our inquiry on the Brillant Bee display in our classroom. We have even had some visiting bee friends this week!
Have a look at Sophie's writing to find out something very exciting that happened this week in Room 11.
On Thursday Noeline gave Room 11 some fish, they were gold. There was some plants in the tank. I was excited alot. I want the fish to stay in Room 11. By Sophie
These are the names we gave our two new friends.

Our poem and art work this week was focused on firework safety. Check out your child's own firework safety message on the kidzstuff blog link in our sidebar.

Week 1 Term 4

Welcome back to Term 4, our final term together...how time flies. With the promise of hot summer days just around the corner we have been learning why it is important to wear our hats when we are outside this time of year. Please ensure your child has a wide brimmed hat at school everyday, clearly labelled with their name and Room 11. Our "Sun" poem helped us with this learning.
We began the week with a special honey and toast breakfast .......

...this got us thinking about bees, flowers and humans and was a fun way to start off our Brilliant Bee inquiry topic. Take a look at our tuxpaint pictures and what we already know about bees on our kidzstuff blog or on our classroom display.
Bees collect pollen from flowers. Bees can sting you. There is a queen bee. People eat honey.

To help us with our focus on narrative writing this term we thought about adjectives that could help us describe the very long, rather unusual snake that we made. How many adjectives can you hear on this clip?

Week 9 and 10 Term 3

A very busy 2 weeks started with a Folk Dancing performance with Renwick 3 for our families and friends. Great fun was had by all, especially when we taught our mum's and dad's how to do the Birdie Dance.

We had a lovely surprise when we received a gift voucher from NZEI as part of our prize for winning the Year 1 section of the School is Cool poster competition. We spent it on new games for the classroom and some new colouring pens.
Our focus this week in art, writing and music has been the arrival of Spring. We painted cherry blossom trees in the style of French artist Monet. We used our joining and fixing skills developed this term to make some 3D butterflies. Look at how we kept both sides of the butterfly symmetrical. We also wrote acrostic poems on a Spring theme...take a look at all this work on our Kidzstuff blog all in the entrance of the school.
Our poem of the week was about all four of the seasons.

On the last day of term we had a special visit by author Ben Brown and illustrator Helen Taylor. Here they are showing us how the text and the pictures were put together to make the finished book "A Booming in the Night."
Also on Friday we had to say goodbye to Barry who has been working with us for the last 5 weeks. We have really enjoyed having him in our room and will miss him not being there next term Good luck with your studies Barry!
The term ended with the spectacular Masked Parade through the centre of Nelson. Well done everyone who took part and an enormous thank you to all the hard work put in by our fabulous parent helpers. It was fantastic to see so many of our families there and a great way to end the term as the Supreme Winners of the parade.

Week 8 Term 3

We had another very busy week last week. On Tuesday we cheered on all the spectators and players from the rugby re-enactment game as they paraded past the school on their way to the Botanics.

Some of us were dressed up to make all the Italian fans in Nelson feel at home.

Wednesday was World Peace Day. We thought about what peace means to us and made pin wheels to represent peace. We displayed our pin wheels, along with those made by Room 12, on the front field for passers by to see. There were other pin wheels around town...did you spot any?
Thursday marked the end of our Castles and Dragons topic with a fabulous Medieval dress up day and shared banquet. Well done everyone, you looked amazing. Did you spot us in the paper?

Week 7 Term 3

On Tuesday we went along to the museum for a Maori workshop entitled Nga Mahi a Te Rehia, meaning pastimes and games. We learnt how to keep the rhythm with raku sticks......
.....developed our eye and hand co-ordination playing knuckle bones and.......
...got our fingers in a tangle learning some new string games.
Thank you to all the parents that came along to help us..we hope you learnt something new as well.
We have also been increasing our usage of Te Reo in the classroom as Barry teaches us new phrases and waiata. Next week he will be helping us to learn a simple mihi.
We have been very busy exploring ways of fixing different materials to help us finish off Doodle, our class dragon and bringing our castle designs alive. You can see a bit of what we have been up to on this short slide show or come into class and see the real thing!
